Georgian polyphony in space

  1876

Georgian folk music indeed holds an incredible legacy. Its roots trace back to ancient times, serving as a reflection of the nation's rich history, values, and cultural essence. The polyphonic nature of Georgian music, renowned for its harmonious blend, resonates deeply with the spiritual and moral aspects, showcasing the collective identity, philanthropy, and heroic spirit of the Georgian people.

The tradition of Georgian music extends far beyond mere entertainment; it's interwoven into the very essence of Georgian identity. It accompanies the Georgian table, creating an atmosphere that embodies the spirit and character of the people. Through centuries, this music has been a constant companion, resonating during moments of war, labor, illness, joy, and sorrow, serving as a source of strength and courage in times of adversity.

"Chakrulo" holds a significant place in Georgian musical heritage as a classical, choral, and polyphonic table song, specifically belonging to Kartl-Kakhuri tradition. It's revered as a classic example of Bourdon polyphony, characterized by its rich harmonic texture and vocal intricacy. The historical recording of "Chakrulo" by Zakaria Faliashvili in Vachnadzian village marked its documentation. This song is noted for its complex modulation changes, showcasing the technical prowess and depth of Georgian polyphonic music.

In 2001, UNESCO recognized Georgian polyphony as a masterpiece of oral and intangible heritage of humanity. As part of this acknowledgment, "Chakrulo" was specifically included in UNESCO's list of intangible world heritage sites, celebrating its cultural significance and contribution to the global musical landscape.

Absolutely, the story of "Chakrulo" reaching the cosmos is a point of immense pride for Georgians. The Voyager Golden Record, often referred to as the "golden disc," was a remarkable initiative in the late '70s. This disc carried a wealth of information about Earth and its inhabitants, intended as a representation of humanity's diverse culture, knowledge, and art.

Among the carefully curated selection of 27 musical pieces on the gold disc, "Chakrulo" earned its place to represent the rich musical heritage of Georgia. Voyager 2, which carries this record, has traveled an astonishing distance of almost 16 billion kilometers from Earth and continues its journey into the depths of space, truly carrying a piece of Georgian culture far beyond our planet.
